Thinking Like a (Creative) Genius
This web page lists a
study guide with eight different strategies for becoming
"super creative." |
Higher Self Tech: Finding
Your Creative Joy
Not all of us have an urge to write. Some of us like to paint,
others like to create meaningful relationships, or be technical
creative geniuses. Whatever the path, there is a way to find
and unblock our creativity passion to reach the wellspring
of inner creative joy.
To understand where our joy lies, we must first understand ourselves.
What do we do in our spare time? Those things that we are not
"required" to do just to pay the bills, or to please a spouse,
or to maintain a life-style, may be telling us something about
ourselves. Small things also count. Do we spend the day straightening
our house, not because it needs it but because we enjoy it? Maybe
our passion lies in organizing elements. Not all creativity is
limited to the arts. Make a list of twenty things you like to
do for the sheer pleasure of the experience. Now, set aside time
once a week to do that activity. Julia Cameron recommends doing
this by yourself, however, if your passion is talking to people
on the phone, it hardly works. This is what Julia refers to as
an "artist's" date. My artist's dates would be singular activities
as they do not require others but I would rather the choice be
left open to the individual.
Whatever our joy, the morning pages that Julia Cameron recommends
are useful for understanding Self, not just for blocked writers.
Every morning wake up a half hour early and write three pages,
long-hand,
of
your
stream
of
consciousness. It can be grousing about waking up early, about
what you want to have for breakfast, the fight you had with your
kid, the funny joke you heard. It doesn't matter. By taking time
to familiarize what it is that you think about everyday, you
become more and more in tune to your inner Self, begin to understand
your motivations and passion, and awaken the creative genius
within. |
